Nazaré Beach is temporarily closed to swimming, by decision of the competent authorities, following an “anomalous runoff, accompanied by bad odors near the coastline”, the Nazaré City Council reported this Friday, in a statement.
According to the municipality, the situation stemmed from a "recently recorded technical issue with the stormwater system," which caused the incident. The leak was promptly identified and, according to the statement, "was already technically resolved by the relevant services" yesterday.
Although the site currently has “no visible signs of runoff or bad odors,” the municipality has chosen to maintain the ban on bathing until the results of laboratory tests carried out on the storm drain outlet by an accredited entity are known.
The Chamber guarantees that the results will be released "as soon as possible" and ensures that it is monitoring the situation "closely, with reinforced monitoring and frequent surveillance on site, in order to prevent any recurrence."
In the same statement, the municipality reinforces its call for "serenity and confidence in the actions of municipal services and competent entities", reiterating its commitment to "public health, environmental quality and the safety of users" of the beach, which is distinguished with awards such as the Blue Flag.
